Loss of sleep can also cause a reduction of the rate of carbohydrate metabolism, causing glucose to accumulate in the body.

When the amount of glucose in the body increases, the production of insulin becomes more, and this can cause bigger problems such as obesity.

Also, when you do not sleep adequately, you are prone to gain weight because you will develop a sweet tooth. You will want to binge on sweets and other high carbohydrate foods. You will also develop a fixation for junk foods that are high in empty calories but do not provide any nutrition. These junk foods can provide a quick source of energy but they cannot do anything for the body from the point of view of nutritional enrichment.

You can take these calories into your body easily, but it will be very difficult to remove them.

There are some practical considerations also. If you don’t sleep, you are going to shirk your exercises and your physical activity is bound to reduce also. You will find tired and sluggish throughout the day. You will feel drowsy most of the day and your body fat will simply add unnecessary mass to your body.

Different people require different amounts of sleep. For some people, the minimum sleep requirement could be as much as 10 hours a day.
